Gareth Williams. Chris stayed on at Durham in Gareth’s group to obtain his PhD in “The Development of New Chelates for Mg, Ca and Zn Ions”. After having completed a short postdoctoral stint with Dr M.K. Etherington, Chris joined the McGonigal Group in 2023 as a postdoctoral research associate working on fluxional molecules. Mariia stayed at York to pursue a PhD in the McGonigal group funded by the Wild Fund Scholarship, where her research focuses on “Organic Synthesis of Dynamically Chiral Ligands Using Shapeshifting Molecules”. His doctoral research cantered on synthesising perylene-based liquid crystal molecules for optoelectronic applications. Her research focuses on developing novel electrolytes that exhibit phase-independent ionic conductivity for next-generation energy storage applications. Before joining Oxford, she worked as a Research Associate at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India, where she developed vitrimer-based strategies for polymer recycling and upcycling. She also held a Visiting Researcher position at Brunel University London in 2023. Dr Samanta earned her PhD in Chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), India, in 2022, where her doctoral research focused on conducting polymer nanocomposites for enhanced electrical conductivity. During her PhD, she was also a Newton-Bhabha Fellow in Prof. Paul McGonigal’s group at Durham University in 2017, where she explored cycloheptatriene based donor–acceptor systems and the synthesis of organic molecular receptors. He received his BSc in Chemistry (with Distinction) in 2021 from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and his PhD in Chemistry in 2025 from the University of Manchester, UK, working under the supervision of Prof David A. Leigh FRS. During his PhD, he developed artificial chemical fuels, molecular machines, and catalysis-driven endergonic processes in the context of Brownian ratchets and non-equilibrium systems. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), and is an elected committee member in the RSC Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (MASC) Interest Group.
